For Carmelo Alfano, becoming a father changed the course of his career. Having children temporarily brought his professional momentum to a halt, and when they moved to New Zealand, he travelled to see them twice a year for 15 years. Both now live with him. That long period of balancing music with family responsibilities is central to understanding the London artist’s less-than-conventional path.
Alfano’s own childhood had already shown him how closely music and family could be connected. His father, an accomplished amateur tenor, introduced him to opera through recordings such as those of Beniamino Gigli. Although Carmelo initially explored acting, he later pursued voice lessons and spent two years studying in Modena with a teacher of Luciano Pavarotti. His Sicilian family roots and English upbringing also helped shape his independent outlook.
His career has since included performing, acting and television sound engineering. With his band, Alfano, he supported James Blunt, briefly shared his management and played across London’s live circuit. Beyond work, his interests include watches, vintage American comics and vinyl records. Yet when reflecting on professional achievement, he places particular value on having taught himself the skills needed to become self-sufficient in music.
That emphasis on independence accompanies his lead single, “Is This You?”, due on 1 September 2026. The forthcoming release follows years in which family life, practical learning and musical ambition have all demanded his attention. Rather than a straightforward climb through the industry, Alfano’s story is one of interruptions, renewed effort and a continuing commitment to making music.
